The full name of the National Defense University of Science and Technology is the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army, located in Changsha, Hunan Province. It is a military comprehensive university directly under the leadership of the Central Military Commission of the CPC, and has always been a key university of the state and the military. It is one of the 156 key national construction projects in the first five-year plan, one of the 20 key universities determined by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1959, one of the first institutions approved by the State Council to grant master's and doctoral degrees, one of the first trial graduate schools in the country, one of the first institutions to enter the national "211 Project" construction plan, the only institution in the military to enter the national "985 Project" construction ranks, and one of the institutions included in the national "Double First Class" construction support.

The predecessor of National University of Defense Technology was the Military Engineering College of the People's Liberation Army, established in Harbin in 1953, also known as Harbin Military Industry. In 1970, the main body of the college moved south to Changsha and was renamed as Changsha Institute of Technology. In 1978, under the direct care of Chairman Deng Xiaoping, the school was rebuilt as the National University of Defense Science and Technology. In 1999, President Jiang Zemin signed an order to establish a new National University of Defense Science and Technology. In 2017, the school was rebuilt based on the University of National Defense Science and Technology, School of International Relations, School of National Defense Information, Xi'an Communication University, School of Electronic Engineering, and School of Meteorology and Oceanography of University of Science and Technology. The main campus was located in Changsha, and the internal colleges were located in Changsha, Nanjing, Wuhan, Hefei, and other places.
